The National Communities In Schools organization had a study done for the overall program and for CIS Houston specifically relative to return on investment. Economic Modeling Specialists Inc. (EMSI), a highly regarded group in this field, did the study.
Return on investment is critical for business (and personal) investments, but it often is thought to be nearly impossible to determine for not-for-profit groups. In this case, the data is relatively straightforward. EMSI uses the annual cost for CIS, then uses as benefit the differential pay that high school graduates receive versus non graduates and also uses the national percentage of students who go on to complete higher training and the associated salary increases. Finally, they take into account decreases in cost to society (social cost, lost taxes) by using established information.
This is a direct quote from EMSI — “Local graduates will, on average, have returned the investment by the time they are 25 years old and will be net contributors to the economy for the rest of their working lives.”
