Launched this past fall, Study Bear Buddies is a student-to-student tutoring initiative that matches National Junior Honor Society students with students who are struggling in one subject or more. Study Bear Buddies are paired with Communities In Schools case-load students who are in need of extra homework help, as well as teacher-referred, SBMS students in need of academic support.
The aim of the program is three-fold:
- Provide students who are struggling academically with a positive academic role model
- Give NJHS students an opportunity to acquire community service hours during the school day
- Create friendships and embrace the diversity of SBMS
The group meets every Thursday during activity period and snacks, OJ and water are on hand to fuel their brains! There are 30-35 students on average each week and, so far, seems to be earning all As at accomplishing its three main goals. Let’s hear it for Study Bears!
